How Yoga Can Help You Achieve Restful Sleep
Getting a good night's sleep is an important part of living a healthy lifestyle. Unfortunately, many of us struggle to get the rest we need, leaving us feeling tired and sluggish during the day. Luckily, yoga has been proven to help improve your quality of sleep and make it easier to drift off into dreamland. Let’s look at how yoga can help you achieve restful sleep.
Yoga Poses for Better Sleep
There are several yoga poses that can be done before bed to help you get a better night's sleep. One of the most popular poses is called "Legs Up the Wall." To do this pose, start by lying down on your back with your legs extended out in front of you and your arms resting at your sides. Then, slowly lift your legs up toward the ceiling until they are perpendicular to the floor and press them up against the wall. Hold this pose for 5-10 minutes while breathing deeply and focusing on relaxation. This pose helps reduce stress in your lower back and releases tension from your legs so that you can drift off into a peaceful slumber.
Breathing Exercises for Better Sleep
Another way that yoga can help you get more restful sleep is through breathing exercises. Focusing on controlled breathing helps relax both mind and body so that it’s easier for you to fall asleep faster and stay asleep longer. One breathing exercise that can be done right before bed is “Alternate Nostril Breathing” or “Nadi Shodhana Pranayama." To do this exercise, sit comfortably in a cross-legged position or lie down in Savasana (corpse pose). Place your left hand on your left knee with palm facing up, then use your right hand to cover one nostril at a time while inhaling deeply through the other nostril, then exhaling through both nostrils slowly as you switch hands between nostrils. Repeat this exercise 10 times before bed for best results.
Getting enough restful sleep is essential for good health; however, many people struggle to get their recommended 8 hours each night due to busy lifestyles or stress levels that just won't quit. Fortunately, yoga provides us with tools like poses and breathing exercises that make it easier for us to drift off into dreamland peacefully and wake up feeling refreshed and energized! So if you're looking for an easy way to improve the quality of your sleep, try adding some yoga into your nighttime routine today!
